Yes, you’ve read the headline correctly. When a nurse in Kentucky’s Letcher County scooped a dead-drunk raccoon out of a dumpster, she was desperate to save its life. It had been a normal day on the job for Misty Combs, arriving at the Letcher County Health Department location in Whitesburg, just next door to the Kentucky Mist Moonshine distillery. It’s difficult to imagine many other states where these two firms would share a parking lot, but it was there that last week Combs saw a raccoon darting back and forth, behaving strangely. Combs told local news that curiosity led her to follow the raccoon to a nearby dumpster where the stink of alcohols was heavy in the air. The distillery had discarded some fermented peaches in the dumpster, and looking inside, two juvenile raccoon…
