A Shining Return: Rare Sea Turtles Journey Home After Heroic Rescue

The story of these "little gems" began far from the Gulf, amidst the frigid winter waters of Cape Cod. Caught in a severe "cold-stunning" event, these turtles suffered from hypothermic shock, which can lead to life-threatening dehydration and pneumonia. Thanks to the tireless efforts of the New England Aquarium, which saved over 450 sea turtles this season alone, these fragile creatures were stabilized and then flown to New Orleans via chartered flight. There, the dedicated staff at Audubon Aquarium Rescue took over, providing the intensive rehabilitation needed to give these tiny ocean travelers a second chance at life.
To track their progress and honor their unique spirits, each turtle was named after a precious mineral. From Jade and Mica to Opalite and Aquamarine, these "rocks" were carefully tended to until they were ready to shine once more. Among the group were also two green sea turtles named Calvin and Martha, who had been rescued from a separate event in Louisiana. The aquarium staff celebrated their recovery with a touching sentiment: after months of care, these polished stones were finally ready to return to the sparkling blue waters where they belong.
